Understanding Remote Online Notarization in Michigan

Some notaries are able to notarize documents online! This is known as Remote Online Notarization, or RON. In the State of Michigan, notaries must register as online notaries with the state and verify that they subscribe to a secure online system to conduct their notarizations.

It’s important for clients to know that mobile notarizations cost more than in-person notarizations because of the additional fees charged by the secure online systems that facilitate notarizations.

While Michigan limits the fees for notarizations to $10 per signature, online platforms likely charge additional fees. AND, you may find a notary in another state who can legally notarize your documents, but that notary may be able to charge significantly more for their signature–some states have no limits at all!

The National Notary Association lists all the fee limits for each state on their web site (https://www.nationalnotary.org/knowledge-center/about-notaries/notary-fees-by-state). I would recommend reviewing this document to learn more about how notaries charge for their services.
