Understanding Remote Online Notarization: FAQs Answered

Here are some frequently asked questions about remote online notarizations.

1. How does Remote Online Notarization (RON) work?

RON notaries use secure online systems to verify your identity and notarize your documents. Michigan law stipulates that these sessions must use video technology to ensure that the signer is who they claim to be.

2. Will my documents be accepted if notarized electronically?

In most cases, yes. But it’s always good to check with the person, agency, or company where you will be sending your documents. Even mortgage signings can be completed via RON!

3. What does the process involve?

Your notary will send you an email invitation to the RON session. You should have your documents scanned and be ready to upload them to the site. You will also go through identity verification, where you upload a picture of your government ID and answer personal knowledge questions to verify your identity. Once done, your notary will join you in the session and indicate how to sign. Your documents will be emailed to you immediately after the session is over.

4. Does RON cost more than in-person notarizations?

In Michigan, no. Our fees are still limited to $10 per notarization.

5. Do I have to select a notary from my own state?

Usually not. There are some specific circumstances where documents MUST be notarized by a notary in your home state, but that should be clear on your forms. Legally, Michigan notaries can notarize documents for any U.S. citizen, anywhere in the world as long as the notary is physically located in Michigan.

6. Where can I find a RON-certified notary?

First, I hope you contact us! Maxima notaries are RON-certified and are available to schedule notarizations 24/7.

But you can also search your state’s web site for RON-certified notaries. For example, in Michigan you can go to https://www.michigan.gov/sos/notary-services and click on “Search for a Notary Online”. You can even select notaries approved for remote notarization and get a statewide list!
